Rust Legacy · 2015 build

The Rust we
played in 2015

A European server running the original version of Rust, the one before Experimental. Old map, radiation, C4 that actually costs something. Download the launcher, create an account, play: no Steam, no payment.

01 // The project

Rust changed.
This did not.

In 2014 Facepunch restarted Rust from scratch and left the original version behind. That version still exists, still works, and here it runs on a dedicated server — maintained, updated when needed, and open to anyone who wants in.

01

Original client

The 2015 build, not a reconstruction. Old procedural map, radiation, original crafting, and the animals that were in it — no zombies, they were gone by then. The launcher downloads the full package and verifies its integrity before installing.

02

An account, not a file

Your in-game identity belongs to your account, not to a file on disk. Switch computers and your base and inventory are where you left them; nobody else can log in as your character.

03

Server-side control

Players who have not signed in are refused by the server, not by the launcher. That difference matters: the launcher runs on the player’s computer, the check runs on a machine no player controls.

02 // Where everyone went

The servers that closed

Rust Legacy has been kept alive by a handful of communities, and most of them are gone. Legion is the name that still comes up most often when people look for the old Rust — it is not running any more, and neither are most of the servers people remember from those years. Every time one closes, the people on it stop playing not because they wanted to but because there was nowhere left to go.

This server picks up where those left off: the same 2015 build, the same original map, kept on a machine that is paid for and maintained. If you came here looking for a server that has shut down, this is the same game.

Why they close

Almost always the same two reasons, and neither is about the game: whoever paid for the machine stopped, or whoever administered it ran out of time. A Rust Legacy server is not hard to run — it is hard to keep running for years without anyone noticing the work.

What is different here

Nothing is promised for ever, and a server that swore it would never close would be lying. What can be said is concrete: the costs are covered, the accounts are in a database that gets backed up, and the wipes are announced instead of happening overnight. If it ever has to close, it will be said in advance and not by going dark.

03 // How to play

Three steps

From first visit to first night in game. The package is large — 3.4 GB — so the first launch takes patience; after that it opens in seconds.

Create the account

Email, password, and the name you want in game. You confirm the address with a link, then the account exists.

Download the launcher

One program for Windows or Mac. On first launch it downloads the game, checks its fingerprint and installs it in its own folder.

Get in

Sign in with your account and press Play. The launcher configures the connection itself: there is no address to copy by hand.

On first launch Windows and macOS will show a warning. The launcher has no code signature — that costs a yearly certificate this project does not have. On Windows choose «More info → Run anyway»; on Mac right-click → Open. If you would rather not, that is a fair choice: here is the SHA-256 fingerprint so you can verify the file yourself.

04 // Download

The launcher

Windows playrustlegacy.exe · 23 MB · 64-bit macOS playrustlegacy.app · 11 MB · Apple Silicon

You need an account to use the launcher. Create one — it takes less than a minute.

Your system will say it cannot verify the developer

That is expected: neither launcher is signed with a certificate, because signing costs a yearly fee to Apple and Microsoft. The warning is about the signature, not about what the program does.

macOS — open the folder, right-click playrustlegacy and choose «Open», then «Open» again in the dialog. Double-clicking will not work: that menu item exists precisely to make the consent explicit.

Windows — on «Windows protected your PC» press «More info», then «Run anyway».

If you would rather not bypass the warning, compare the fingerprints alongside first: they are the verification the signature would have given you.

Who is inside

The server is small and European, and everything on it is in English by default. Wipes announced in advance, few clear rules, and somewhere to ask when something breaks.

The rules

Five lines, not a treaty. What is allowed, what gets you removed, how to report a problem.

07 // Supporters

Three euros, once. The kits stay.

The server costs money every month and stays free to play. Chipping in is optional: three euros, one time, and three kits are yours on this wipe and on every wipe after it.

What you become

A supporter, which here means one concrete thing: three commands work in game for you. No badge, no coloured name, no reserved slot, no separate chat — and no monthly charge. It is unlocked once and stays: a wipe resets the world, not your account and not this.

The three kits

You type the command in the game chat and the items land in your inventory. Each one has a cooldown of its own, so the three do not share one timer: calling /kitstarter does not delay /kitpremium.

/kitpremium

Premium kit

Cooldown
once every 24 hours

A rifle and a full kevlar set. This is the one that changes a fight, and the 24-hour wait is what keeps it from changing every fight.

Contains

  • M4 ×1
  • 5.56 ammo ×200
  • Large medkit ×5
  • Kevlar vest ×1
  • Kevlar helmet ×1
  • Kevlar pants ×1
  • Kevlar boots ×1

/kithome

Home kit

Cooldown
once an hour

The parts for a small shelter with a metal door. Enough to close yourself in somewhere after being raided, not enough to build a base out of.

Contains

  • Metal door ×1
  • Wood foundation ×1
  • Wood pillar ×4
  • Wood wall ×3
  • Wood doorway ×1
  • Wood ceiling ×1

/kitstarter

Starter kit

Cooldown
once every 10 minutes

Food, a hatchet, a torch, bandages and a sleeping bag. What you would have gathered in your first ten minutes anyway: it skips the part nobody enjoys after respawning.

Contains

  • Can of beans ×5
  • Hatchet ×1
  • Sleeping bag ×1
  • Small medkit ×5
  • Torch ×1

How it works

There is no automatic purchase. Three steps by hand, because the payment and the game account are not connected to each other in any way — the note at the end of this section says why that is on purpose.

  1. Send three euros

PayPal opens with the amount already filled in. It is the same link as everywhere else on this site.

  2. Write with the receipt

Send the PayPal receipt and your SteamID to the support address. The SteamID is on your profile page: without it there is no way to tell which account to unlock.

  3. The kits are switched on

By hand, by whoever runs the server, usually within a day. Once it is done your profile page says so, and the three commands work in game.

Support address
support@playrustlegacy.com

Write from any address you like: the one that matters is the game account, and that is identified by the SteamID, not by the sender.

Send three euros (opens PayPal)

What it does not buy — no advantage, no exception, no refund

Worth being exact about, because this is the part that decides whether a server stays worth playing on:

  • Not the rules — every line of the rules page applies to a supporter exactly as it does to anybody else. Cheating gets the account removed and the three euros are not a refund and not an argument.
  • Not admin, not priority, not protection — no commands beyond those three, no slot kept free, no help in a fight, no immunity from being raided. Your base can be levelled like anyone else’s.
  • Nothing you can only get this way — every item in the three kits is craftable in game by anybody. What you are buying is time, not access: this is a shortcut, not a locked door with a key.
  • Not a refund — it is a one-off payment between private individuals, not a purchase from a company. If the server closes tomorrow, nothing comes back. Send three euros only if losing them would not bother you.

Why by hand

A proper shop would tie your payment to your game account automatically. Doing that means letting a payment service call this site, keeping a record of who paid and how much, and taking on the accounting duties that come with selling something. For three euros on a server run by one person in their spare time, that is more machinery than the thing itself.

The consequence, in plain terms: the payment and the account are linked by a person reading an email. So the receipt is what proves it, and it is worth keeping — and the site stores no payment data of any kind, because none ever reaches it.

If you delete your account

The unlock goes with it. It is stored on the account row, so deleting the account deletes it, and signing up again gives you a new SteamID — a new character, without the kits. There is no way to move it across, and an old receipt cannot restore it. Deleting is still the right thing if that is what you want; just know this goes too.

Nobody who plays here owes anything. The server is open, the whole game is playable without paying, and no door on it is closed to whoever does not. If three euros are not something you feel like spending on a 2015 game server, that is a perfectly ordinary answer.
